Android brings its Update for the Nexus Line Gadgets

Google will soon launch its Android 5.0 L upgrade which will be functional on Nexus gadgets like: Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and the most recent Nexus 10. The company has not made public any release date but there are various rumors spreading around on the basis of the precedent Google launches.

Google has managed to launch two variants of the Android every year, one in summer and the other one in late autumn. It has been observed that every important Android upgrade was closely followed by the release of a brand new Nexus gadget. But this year Google wants to change the pattern a little bit.

It appears that the company is taking Apple’s model when it comes to launching products. What does Apple’s launching pattern look like? First Apple announces its iOS upgrades in summer at the WWDC. The announcement is followed by the release of the beta for the developers while the public gets the upgrade in autumn. This year, Google presented its Android L at the Google I/O. It was available for download in the form of Developer Preview and there are high chances for the public at large to receive it this autumn once the new Nexus is announced.

Google has plans to launch a program similar to Nexus named Android Silver, which will put an end to the Nexus line. But the Google representative has said that the company does not want to give up to its Nexus and as a consequence the entire network was invaded by news of the future Nexus gadgets. First were the rumors about some Nexus tablet produced by HTC and having the strange name of Volantis. It is said that the gadget will have a screen of 8.9 inch and an aspect ratio of 4:3. The processor will be a 64 bit one. News about the Nexus 6 came from various sources during the past weeks. It appears that the mobile phone is manufactured by Motorola and has the name of Shamu. It appears to have a Quad HD screen equal to 5.2 inches. It also has a processor of the quad-core Snapdragon 805 CPU type. The main camera is equal to 13 megapixels and the random access memory is of three gigabytes. Both gadgets will be functioning on Android 5.0 L.

It is very well known the fact that every new version of Android has a number and it bears the name of a dessert. For the time being the new upgrade is known as Android L, but it will definitely be released under a different name, like Android 5.0. Some sources claim that the upgrade will be called either Licorice or Lollipop.

The Android 5.0L is the most important upgrade that Android has made since 2008. It is more important than the upgrade from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. The Android 5.0 L has been designed with the purpose of being more intuitive by means of the 3D shadows and effects. The interface looks better. The colors are richer and there is more animation.

The Android 5.0L has a new lock screen and a new notifications bar. It is now possible to interact with the notifications. The notifications can be prioritized on how often the user interacts with them. The notification bar has also got a changed color scheme. The Quick Settings button has gone away but the menu is still there with another looks. The Quick Settings menu has the usual toggles for WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, Sound and Locations and some extra like Rotation Lock and Do Not Disturb. The Brightness Control has the form of a slider and there is the “Adaptive Brightness” instead of “Auto Brightness.

The status bar has also been changed, having quite a different behavior. It is transparent while on the home and lock screen and it is colored while opening an application. The screen, with multitasking features is better as well. It has got an interface based on a card. Some applications present more than just one card.

The upgrade will be functional on Nexus line devices like the Nexus 4,5,7 and Nexus 10. Then the upgrade will be available for the Google Play Experience. Probably, Motorola will update its devices functioning on Android. The HTC devices will probably get the upgrade in ninety days after Google gives green line to the final code. LG, Sony, Samsung and other companies producing gadgets running on Android will probably get the upgrade towards the end of the present year or beginning of the new.

It is not that easy to kick Android out of the Enterprise Market

The team Apple-IBM has definitely been a surprise for many. They have already been strong by themselves and now that they are together they will definitely be quite a menace for other players on the market. However, this partnership does not mean the end for Android and the devices running on this operating system.

There many who say that the Apple-IBM partnership is going to kick out both Microsoft and Android out of big companies. Obviously, they are exaggerating a bit. Android has proven to be a good operating system and it is not going to leave its market share just like this and vanish overnight.

There are specialists in the domain who claim that the partnership between IBM and Apple represents an enormous loss for Google and at the same time a setback for Android. They bring forward the argument that this association removes Apple weakness when it comes to its offer for enterprises. Not to mention that the iOS is going to be backed up by IBM whose reputation among business cannot be questioned. This is not at all good news for Android and gadget running on it.

Is the Apple-IBM partnership that powerful after all?

People involved or interested in the electronics domain should keep in mind that the IBM-Apple partnership is nothing more than a sales deal, and business deals do not last forever. It has to be considered the fact that IBM is not the only player on the enterprise market while Apple has quite a terrible history of team working with other companies.

Enterprises are supplied with software not only by IBM but also by other powerful players like Microsoft, HP or Dell. To these we have to add Google Apps and numerous other minor companies. The association is positive for Apple and IBM but it does not meant the end of Android.

It cannot be denied that both companies have competent staff. The secret weapon of IBM has always been its share of independent partners, who have always created a series of custom solution based on the offerings made by IBM.

IBM as well has the habit of breaking up contracts with its partners. Thus, most of times their partners spend a lot of time and energy worrying that IBM might just walk out of the business, taking with them the deal as well. Apple also likes to have things done according to its wishes. It is highly unlikely for Apple to produce an iPhone or an iPad tailored according to the specific demands of a certain enterprise, no matter how big it is.

It is true that Apple will turn into reality a feature like a fingerprint sensor home button, but there are little chances for it to make a new version of iOS just because a certain client wants some sort of low-level security options. Apple is difficult to work with because of its strange team philosophy: it is either our way or nothing. IBM is not far from that either.

Is Android History?

Android is far from being history. The system is designed for flexibility and this is not an adjective that can be used to describe Apple. Although famous, the iOS system is quite limited and it can be used only on certain devices. It cannot be like the Android.  Moreover, Android can be adjusted to almost any form-factor/price needed by the client. Apple and its iOS cannot be labeled as such.

An example of the flexibility that characterizes the Android systems was given two years ago when Android was used for creating military hardened kernels to be used in battle.

It is important as well to mention Samsung’s success with the Knox, especially created for companies. Lots of systems created for the management of mobile gadgets can function with Android. This is almost impossible with the iOS platform.

On the other hand, IBM is not at its first attempt to handle devices. Most people in the electronics business remember how at the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s IBM tried to resuscitate the Palm gadgets and gave them the name of WorkPads. In the end the business did not end up very well for Palm.

What will happen when IBM brings in a customer that needs a custom tablet application and on top of that wants the screen to show only that application? Is Apple going to do that? Delete all applications? Doubtful.

Android offers users access to any system they need. They are not limited to the icons on the screen. The home screen can be replaced and the user can create a solution that suits his/her needs. This cannot be done with iOS. For instance, the Newsstand application is always there and it cannot even be hidden in a folder or somewhere else.

Android has the possibility to offer businesses exactly what they want. It can offer them devices that have the required dimensions, colours and even case material. Apple will not do this; it does not comply with its philosophy.

Another thing to keep in mind is that although the American market is big, it is not the only one. There are quite some many nations that want solutions for enterprises and government institutions that do not come from an American company. Take China for example: Huawei can give the Chinese people, all the gadgets they want, minus the fears of cyber espionage.

Is Android going to be removed from the enterprise mobile devices market? The answer is a definite no.  The IBM-Apple teaming up is nothing more but a sales deal. It is common for IBM to make such deal. It cannot be denied that IBM knows how to close a good deal for itself but the history of its partnerships point out that their associates did not manage to reach their goals.

Android is a powerful and efficient competitor. It is extremely popular because it is flexible, it has cheap suppliers and it has the ability to mould on the users’ desires and wants. These characteristics have helped Android to face fierce competitors like Dell or Google.

In conclusion, Android is nowhere near to lose the battle for the enterprise market. It is true that the competition is going to be even harder than it is now, but Android has the chance of coming out as the winner. The IBM-Apple team might resist the Android dominance for a while, but there a few chances from wiping it out from the market.

New Google Innovations for Android

The internet giant company, Google has directed its forces into improving the mapping services of all smart phones running on Android. Google is preparing to launch an upgrade of the Google Maps for its Android software. The 8.2 version of Google Maps is going to be extremely important for cyclists because it will have the capacity to present statistics about elevations. Thus, the bikers will be able to make a detour and will not have to climb a hill unless they really want to. In order to make things more interesting Google has opted to enrich the navigation system with voice control.

The information on elevation is definitely going to help cyclists since it will give them approximations about the elevation while still being on the route. The elevation will be graphically represented under the form of a timeline and the measuring unit for the height will be the meter. This new characteristic still appears as a beta in Google Maps. This means only one thing: there are some more improvements on the way. The elevation characteristic has the ability to make a comparison between various routes, giving the cyclists the possibility that suits their purposes the best.

It is obvious that Google has not lost sight of its non-bikers clients when it comes to the upgrades of the Google Maps. Thus, the mapping service of Android has been enriched with voice commands that offer information on traffic, next-turns and they even estimate the time of the car travel.

Android Police has done a review on this new voice control feature created by Google for Android. The team from the Android Police says that they have observes that the new voice commands are extremely but extremely sensitive. Thus, if the phrase is not uttered exactly, the voice command does not function at all. They consider it even more sensitive the common Google search voice. For the time being this new adjustment appears to be rather frustrating.

There are also some YouTube videos which have been uploaded by the Android Police with the specific aim to demonstrate how the new Google Maps 8.2 actually operates.

For the time being the upgrade is available only for Android variant of the Google Maps service. However, it will soon run on all other devices. Up till now, there is no even a piece of information or a hint about when this new upgrade will be functional for iOS. However, Google is interested in having its upgrades being functional on each of these platforms and therefore the owners of iPads as well as iPhones can start looking for this new version of the Google Maps.

The upgrade for the elevation statistic made its apparition in the month of May. However, the mobile applications were not a part of the upgrade planned by Google.
